The Tutoring Center, Houston TX

Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder, or ADHD, is a disorder affecting an estimated 28% of children between the ages of 3-17. If you are raising a child with ADHD, we are sure that you understand that it can be difficult to deal with at times. It is with you and your child in mind that The Tutoring Center in Houston would like to share a few tips to help ensure that your child is getting the home life needed to help him or her function at their best.

Professional help

Of course, it is recommended that if you think your child may be presenting symptoms of ADHD that you visit a health professional. Pediatricians and child psychologists are well-versed in ADHD and can offer you assistance and support.

Focus on the positive

It is easy to despair when your child is misbehaving, but try to keep a sense of humor and you may well find that behaviour you found exasperating at the time is entertaining just a few hours later. Make sure your child is staying positive, too. It can be immensely frustrating to be a child with ADHD, feeling as if you are never performing how others would like. Talk to your child about how, though they may struggle to focus on subjects they find dull, they are also magnificent at those things they do find interesting. Help your child find a passion and they will likely excel.

Healthy living

Avoid sugary foods that will exacerbate any hyperactivity or attention problems your child may have, and try to limit foods containing E-numbers and artificial preservatives as much as possible, as these have been linked with behavioural issues. Provide your child with as many opportunities to engage in physical activity as you can; it’s recommended that children get at least one hour of exercise daily. Sleep is also fundamental; a good night’s rest can completely alter a child’s mood and behaviour. If your child struggles to sleep, try getting them to take a warm bath before bed, create relaxing smells of lavender or patchouli in their bedroom, and try spending some time cuddling with them as they go to sleep to provide a safe, supportive atmosphere.

There are a number of other tactics you can use to help your child to stay focused, for instance following our tips on staying focused in class.
